I love watching interviews and reading blog posts by people who really know their stuff when it comes to natural skincare. I believe you can never do too much research on ways to improve the quality of your skin! One thing that I’ve noticed across the board is that everyone seems to be raving about a new facial life changing oil, serum or elixir! These seemingly similar products are a great addition to anyone’s skincare routine and have a long list of benefits. However, the first step is understanding the difference between serums, oils and elixirs so that you can find out which is best suitable for your skin type.

What is the difference between facial oils and serums ?

Well facial oils are amazing for providing the skin with much needed hydration, they are easily absorbed into the skin and are packed full of the benefits of the essential oils. Facial oils can also contain over 200 beneficial molecules that seep deep into the skin!

Serums on the other hand, often provide more benefits than facial oils as they can brighten the skin, slow the formation of lines and wrinkles, tighten the skin and even exfoliate! Serums are water based rather than oil based and full of antioxidants and vitamins. They also contain much smaller molecules compared to facial oils, which means they penetrate the skin at a deeper level.

Some serums are designed to be used on their own, but most can be used in conjunction with your favourite facial oil!

What are the benefits of using facial oils and serums?

Using a moisturiser alone isn’t enough for your skin to be truly hydrated from the inside out. Serums and oils sink deeper into the skin to hydrate and moisturise properly! Because of this, they are designed to target specific skin concerns, meaning they can even be used by people with oily skin to help combat acne and breakouts!

How do you apply serums and oils?

After you have washed your face and dried it lightly, apply your serum or facial oil. You will only need a few drops because a little goes a long way! Massage into your face using circular motions and once they have seeped into the skin, apply your daily moisturiser. Moisturisers should be applied afterwards because they don’t sink into the skin as well, but seal in all the good moisture at the end of your skincare routine!

Which facial serums do I recommend?

One of my favourite facial serums is The Beauty Chef Dream Repair Serum which helps leave my skin looking healthier and smoother! It’s formulated with 18 hard working ingredients that rejuvenate the skin while you sleep. I love to apply this serum at night before bed because it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, meaning when I wake up my skin doesn’t look puffy or tired! Some of the great natural ingredients in this serum include Vitamins A, B, C, E, K and P as well as Omegas 3, 6, 7 and 9!

If you read my blog often then you’ll know how much I love 100% Pure! This Vitamin C Serum is no exception! If you are looking for brighter, fresher skin then this serum is the one for you. It’s suitable for all skin types and works to encourage the production of collagen and leaves your skin looking smoother and deeply hydrated. I like to use this serum in the morning because it’s absorbed really easily, so you don’t have to wait long before applying a moisturiser. I also find that it works best when your skin is slightly damp!

A serum that works wonders for ageing skin is the Acure Firming Facial Serum. This facial serum is seriously firming! It’s perfect for anyone with dry or mature skin because it is highly restoring and correcting. It is full of rich antioxidants and nutrients that revitalise the skin, while the certified organic argan oil restores moisture! It’s the ideal serum for firm, glowing skin!

Which facial oils do I recommend?

Is anyone as obsessed with rosehip as I am? If you are, then you will love the Pai BioRenegerate Rosehip Oil! Clinical studies have shown that Rosehip is effective at improving the appearance of scars, stretch marks, sun damage, pigmentation and fine lines! So it’s no wonder why this facial oil is so beneficial for your skin and boosting its natural healing process! This oil is perfect for anyone looking to improve their skin’s firmness and elasticity. It is also really highly concentrated with essential nutrients that will leaves your skin looking clear, healthy and vibrant. Who doesn’t want that?!

A fantastic anti-ageing facial oil that I recommend, is the Dr Alkaitis Ageless Facial Elixir. This facial oil is designed to create a youthful complexion and healthy glow, which as you probably will agree, is ideal! It’s formulated using a nourishing blend of anti-ageing antioxidants, Ayurvedic herbs and superfoods. If you’re concerned with the appearance of enlarged pores, fine lines or wrinkles then I suggest you give this oil a try! What I love most about this facial oil is the silky soft and feather light consistency that smells delicious!

Finally my last facial oil recommendation is the Vanessa Megan N.E.O Oil. This one is made for anyone with oily or acne prone skin. Yes, you really can use an oil to combat oily skin! This miracle oil may help reduce pimples and redness within a few days and works to soothe sore skin. Made with many essential oils, this Vanessa Megan oil is also great for evening out skin tone, reducing sagging and minimising pores. Amazing!
