Now that it’s December, summer is finally here in Australia! That means hot days, hot nights and the need for some serious sun protection! While we should be using Sunscreen all year round, it is this time of year when we need to make sure we are applying it regularly and everyday. Although nowadays we are much more educated on the risks of sun exposure, there are still so many misconceptions when it comes to applying SPF. So I decided to write this blog post to clear up any sunscreen confusion and share with you a range of natural products!

Let’s start with the basics. Why do we need to wear sunscreen?

When you’re out and about, sunscreen is ideal for helping to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Skin damage from the sun worsens with continued exposure, no matter whether you have visible sunburn or not! Exposure to the sun’s UV rays is the world’s major cause of skin cancer. Australia has some of the harshest UV levels in the world and it is a known fact that in the summer months sunburn can occur after just 11 minutes of being outside!

So what is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UV rays are major causes of sunburn, eye and skin damage and premature ageing. The sun produces two types of harmful ultraviolet rays ’ UVA and UVB.

UVA rays can penetrate deep into our skin which can lead to premature ageing and long-term damaging effects.

UVB rays are responsible for sunburn as they penetrate the superficial layers of our skin. The intensity of these rays differ depending on circumstances like the time of day, season and climate. Prolonged exposure to UVA rays can causes damage over time.

Choosing natural sun protection?

The biggest difference between chemical and physical sunscreens is that chemical-based sunscreens use chemicals to protect your skin against the sun and physical sunscreens use minerals. Instead of absorbing the suns rays like chemical sunscreens, physical ones reflect the light away from your skin like a mirror.

We stock a large range of physical natural sunscreens here at Nourished Life (it's important to note that there are many 'natural based' sunscreens we don't stock as they still contain some non-natural preservatives that don't comply with our strict ingredients policy).

With all sunscreens avoid contact with eyes and if irritation persists discontinue use. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection. Wear protective clothing, hats and sunglasses when exposed to the sun, and stay in the shade where possible. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent reapplication and use in accordance with the directions is required for effective sun protection. Always read the label and use only as directed.
