Making the change to natural deodorant can actually be a really scary task. I am so often asked whether or not natural deodorants really work, what the best natural deodorants actually are, and how difficult it can be to make the switch, and I understand why so many people find it to be a daunting task- particularly given that we rely on deodorant every single day to keep odour at bay! Changing from something that we already know works can feel scary, but trust me, some of the ingredients found in mainstream deodorants are even scarier. I have tried just about every natural deodorant out there so I know which ones are truly effective, but everyone's process of switching can be different as it is about finding what works for you.

To make the process a little less daunting, I’ve put together a guide on all things natural deodorant- from which natural deodorants actually work and which are the best through to how you can physically make the switch.

Why you should switch to natural deodorant

Before I talk you through the process, let’s start with the basics- why should you make the switch from ’regular" deodorant to a natural alternative?

There are so many reasons to switch to natural deodorant, and most of them come down to the ingredients. Applying harsh chemicals to your underarms every day can throw off the bacterial balance in your armpits, which can actually cause your perspiration to smell worse. Restoring balance to your armpits, by making the switch to a natural deodorant, does involve a bit of a detox period- which can sound scary, but is surprisingly simple and so worth it.

How to detox your armpits

What is an armpit detox? Well basically it is a process that can help to make the transition to natural deodorants a bit smoother. It is not necessary, but some people may experience sensitivity when changing from mainstream to natural deodorant due to the difference in ingredients. Many mainstream deodorants can actually be antiperspirants as they contain ingredients such as aluminium to help prevent sweating - natural deodorants differ as they are aluminium-free, instead using antibacterial ingredients to help reduce odour without stopping sweat.

A popular ingredient is Bicarb Soda, widely used in natural deodorant because of its ability to help neutralise odour. However some people may experience initial irritation from Bicarb, especially those with sensitive skin, so it may take some time for our bodies to adjust to this new way of preventing body odour! An armpit detox may consist of applying purifying masks, moisturisers or using a gentle natural deodorant formula to help combat sensitivity and make the transition smoother.

Natural underarm detox treatment

For anyone making the switch to natural deodorants for the first time, I highly recommend starting the process with Earths Purities Detox-A-Pit. This is NOT a deodorant - think of it like a purifying face mask, but for your armpits. Detox-A-Pit works by helping to draw out toxins or impurities that have been building up in the body, working to improve the overall function of your armpits. It contains absorbent ingredients such as Diatomaceous Earth, Bentonite Clay, Activated Charcoal, Apple Cider Vinegar, Colloidal Silver and Coconut Oil to help unblock the sweat glands, and has been formulated to be worn for 10 minutes per day for one week for a thorough detox.

The best natural deodorants for Australian weather

From natural deodorant pastes and sprays to bicarb free options, finding the perfect natural deodorant for you comes down to a bit of trial and error. Whichever formula you prefer, these are the natural deodorants I know I can rely on to get me through an Australian summer.

Natural deodorant paste

One of my favourite natural anti-odourants is the bestselling No Pong All-Natural Anti-Odourant. This creamy paste has been formulated to create a water and bacteria-resistant environment when applied to the underarms, thanks to antibacterial ingredients such as Bicarb, Coconut Oil and Beeswax. Made in Australia and packaged in a reusable tin, this natural deodorant paste has a light, gender-neutral fragrance and has been shown to be effective for over 12 hours, even during tropical heat and strenuous exercise. It also now has over 750 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars.

Bicarb free deodorant paste

If Bicarb does not seem to agree with your skin, I recommend trying the Bicarb Free Version of No Pong. Just as effective as the original but minus the Bicarb, this special formula contains Coconut Oil, Magnesium Hydroxide, Diatomaceous Earth and Beeswax to help absorb moisture and prevent odour while being gentle on sensitive skin. Apply a small amount to underarms and rub in until absorbed.

Natural deodorant spray

If you prefer a deodorant spray to a paste, try the Life Basics Natural Spray Deodorant. Ideal for all skin types, this natural spray contains soothing Aloe Vera, Nettle and Burdock to help protect underarms, with a fresh and subtle scent from fragrant Rose. It makes a perfectly convenient alternative to deodorant paste, and is also vegan and Australian made.

Natural roll-on deodorant

For those who favour a roll on deodorant formula, I recommend the Weleda Pomegranate 24hr Roll-On Deodorant. This fruit-fragranced deodorant is designed to condition the skin while neutralising odour-causing bacteria without clogging the pores or disrupting the body’s natural functions.

How to soothe irritated underarms

If your current deodorant, the detox process or bicarb is triggering irritation flare-ups under your arms, try the Egyptian Magic All Purpose Cream. This cream has so many uses, and soothing itchy underarms is just one of them. Nourished Life’s bestselling barrier cream, Egyptian Magic contains a creamy blend of Olive Oil, Beeswax and Honey to help moisturise and nourish skin. It is actually recommended by naturopaths, dermatologists and plastic surgeons all around the world! I like to apply this overnight for soothing relief if I start to feel itchy.
