How Much Coffee Is Too Much Coffee?

If you’ve been following the news recently, you may have seen a new report claiming that drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee per day can have real health benefits- but how much truth is there to these claims, and how much coffee is too much coffee?!

Is Coffee Bad For You, or Is It Good For Your Health?

New evidence, soon to be presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session, has shown that drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee each day can lead to a lower risk of heart disease, less problems with heart rhythm and, in turn, a longer, healthier life. Coffee has also been shown to assist with regular bowel movements, and past studies have linked moderate coffee intake to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease and even stroke.

It’s not all black and white, however. Due to its high caffeine content, coffee can temporarily raise your blood pressure, cause jitteriness, exacerbate anxiety and panic attacks and cause heart palpitations. These side effects usually only occur if an individual is drinking above the ’healthy" amount each day- upwards of four coffees, daily.

Should You Switch From Coffee To Tea?

The decision to give up coffee is entirely personal. While 2 to 3 cups a day have been shown to be of great benefit to our heart health, it really does depend on how sensitive you are to caffeine. If coffee is causing you to feel jittery, anxious or is disrupting your sleep, then it may be worth switching to tea (which has less caffeine than coffee when brewed, but more caffeine when we look at its raw ingredients) or to a caffeine-free option. That said, if you love your coffee and aren’t experiencing any adverse side effects- drink up and enjoy!
