Turmeric might seem like the latest in health buzzwords and superfoods, but did you know that this golden spice has actually been used for its healing properties for thousands of years? Anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting, this natural health supplement can help to relieve pain and treat inflammation in the body, but it's also an amazing skin care ingredient, helping to fade pigmentation and brighten the complexion. Whether you prefer it in a deliciously warming Turmeric latte, supplement form or in your skin care, this natural spice has so many health and beauty benefits.

The health benefits of turmeric

Turmeric powder is a golden yellow spice derived from the Turmeric root, part of the Ginger family. It has long been used in cooking for its aromatic, spicy flavour and rich yellow pigment, but has actually also been used for over 4000 years as a medicinal treatment in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. In India, it has been used in paste form on the skin to treat everything from smallpox to blemishes. Naturally anti-inflammatory, Turmeric is also known to help treat internal inflammation such as bowel troubles, arthritis and joint pain. Curcumin, the active ingredient, is rich in beneficial antioxidants which help to stop free radical damage in the body, while its antibacterial properties have also been used to fight viral colds and the flu and provide support for the immune system.1

Skincare benefits of turmeric

Not only is Turmeric great for boosting internal health, it can also have wonderful anti-inflammatory effects when applied to the skin topically. Turmeric is now widely being embraced as an amazing skin care ingredient, as those anti-inflammatory qualities can be a real saviour for sensitive skin flare-ups. Its antibacterial powers are effective at fighting off the bacteria that can cause pimples and spots, making it ideal for acne sufferers. Its antioxidant rich properties can also be incredibly beneficial for mature skin, helping to restore vitality, fade sun damage and brighten the complexion.

Turmeric Teas & Supplements

Golden Grind Turmeric Latte Blend
If you want to really reap the immunity powers of this beloved golden spice, then try the Golden Grind Turmeric Latte Blend. This spicy tea is packed with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-microbial properties thanks to the combined powers of Turmeric, Cinnamon and Ginger and Black Pepper, which together are traditionally used to help reduce fever and nausea as well as regulate blood sugar levels. Simply add 1/2 a teaspoon to a mug, add enough water to make a paste, then fill with your favourite warm milk, such as Coconut or Almond milk, and stir well. This warming, revitalising drink makes a delicious alternative to coffee, and is vegan, gluten free and dairy free.

Ethical Nutrients Pain Relief Triple Strength
A great daily Turmeric supplement is the Ethical Nutrients Pain Relief Triple Strength, which uses a blend of Turmeric and Boswellia, or Indian Frankincense. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to assist with the relief of mild arthritic symptoms including joint pain, inflammation, stiffness and minor soft-tissue injury pain. Taken once daily, this gut and liver-friendly supplement can be used to treat temporary pain and inflammation or consumed for ongoing relief.

One of my favourite Turmeric infused skin care products is the Life Basics Konjac Sponge Turmeric. Used daily in conjunction with your favourite cleanser or on its own, this gently exfoliating sponge helps to massage, clean and refresh the face and remove makeup, grime and build-up. Konjac is ideal for mature skin, as Turmeric is known to have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic benefits which help fight free radicals.
