Palm Oil has been in high demand for decades for use in food, soaps and personal care products due to its versatile properties and cheap production costs. It has been reported that around half of products found in the supermarket actually contain Palm Oil, making it more common in everyday items than you might think. But why should we make the switch to Palm Oil Free products?
As more palm plantations are created to meet the demand for this popular commodity, natural rainforests in tropical South East Asia are cleared to make way, destroying the habitats of and further endangering wildlife such as the Orangutan, Elephant and Sumatran Tiger. This rapid deforestation is putting these species at risk of extinction, making it more important than ever to make the switch to Palm Oil Free products, and where necessary, make the switch to sustainable Palm Oil. Brands which manufacture Palm Oil Free products avoid using this ingredient entirely, while other brands might use Certified Organic or Certified Sustainable Palm Oil, which is sourced through more environmentally friendly and ethical means.
