Popular Q&A's for serums and oils

1. What's the difference between a serum and face oil?
Serums and oils serve different purposes, and you can add one or both to your skincare routine. Think of serums as "skincare boosters." They're incredibly potent and contain a higher concentration of ingredients to target specific concerns, like dryness, dullness or premature ageing. Serums contain small molecules that penetrate the deeper layers of your skin, which is why they're so effective.

On the other hand, face oils work to nourish and moisturise the skin and leave it with a healthy-looking glow. They're hydrophobic, which means they lock in moisture and protect it from environmental aggressors. Oils are made up of botanical extracts, vitamins and minerals, and they're rich in fatty acids to strengthen and restore the skin.

You can buy individual oils — like jojoba or rosehip‚ or blends with a few different plant-based oils.

2. When should I use a serum or face oil?

You want to apply your skincare products from thinnest to thickest. So, serum comes first. Apply your serum to slightly damp skin after cleansing and toning, and before eye cream, face oil and/or moisturiser. Press it over your face, neck and decolletage, and let it absorb for a minute before moving on to your other products.

When you get up to the face oil step, warm the oil between your fingertips, and then massage it into your skin using your hands or a guasha tool. This will boost your circulation and leave your skin looking radiant. Follow up with a moisturiser, if you like.

If the face oil is a little heavy on its own, you can mix a few drops of your face oil with your regular moisturiser. You can also add it to your foundation for a glowy makeup look.

3. Can a face oil replace my moisturiser?
Yes, you can use a face oil as a standalone moisturiser. But if your skin is dry, or you'll be dealing with windy weather or air conditioning, we recommend locking in all the face oil goodness with a moisturiser. Moisturisers create a protective barrier on top of your skin, so they're the perfect last step of your skincare routine.

4. Can I use serum or oil on acne-prone skin?

Yes! The key is to choose products that match your skin type and concerns. If you have oily, congested or acne-prone skin, look for a serum with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, vitamin A or fruit enzymes. These ingredients work to unclog pores, control excess oil and draw out impurities for a clearer complexion.

As for face oils, the right one will actually help to balance your skin's natural sebum production. Choose a pure, plant-based oil that's rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A and C to nourish your acne-prone skin. The best face oils contain nothing but high-quality, concentrated ingredients, which is why they're often more expensive than regular moisturisers.
