Traditional non-stick coatings are made with PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene) and PFO (PerFluoroOctanoic). These are synthetic chemicals that when heated release toxic, potentially lethal gases. It’s also linked to thyroid problems, liver and kidney damage, neurological disorders, and infertility! In fact it's been suggested that if this stuff is heated high enough it will turn into the same chemical as the WWII nerve gas phosgene.

The first thing I did when I heard this was write to Le Creuset to ask if they contained these chemicals because I aspire to own their range and I was disappointed when they told me that Two of their products did (Toughened non-stick and the non-stick coated 3-Ply stainless steel), although the rest of their range was safe.

Teflon, the makers of the non stock pans have said they are going to stop producing this by 2015. In the meantime, we can throw away all our non-stick muffin tins and replace with glass, stainless steel or non toxin unbleached baking paper and muffin cups. We can throw away our Teflon fry pans and replace with Stainless Steel, Cast Iron or High Quality Ceramic and use naturals natural non stick solution, organic coconut oil!
