Guide to the Best Natural Dental Products
If you're making the switch to a toxin-free lifestyle, dental products are a great place to start because they're so easily replaced. We often ingest the products we use in our dental routine, so it's important to use natural and safe alternatives that are effective too.
It can be hard to completely overhaul your daily routine to strictly toxin-free products all in one go, so why not start with your dental routine? If toxins in skin care and beauty products make you nervous, it makes sense to change your dental products as well, especially because we often ingest our toothpaste by accident (and kids even moreso). Oral hygiene products need replacing every couple of months anyway, so it's actually quite easy to replace your current dental routine with natural alternatives and phase out the bad stuff for good.
The importance of oral health
There's so much more to oral hygiene than just removing that yucky fuzzy feeling from your teeth. Thoroughly cleaning your teeth at least twice a day removes any bacteria and plaque that has built up in your mouth, which is essential in preventing tooth decay, cavities, stains and bad breath. Good oral hygiene can help maintain healthy teeth and gums, and will also reduce your risk of developing gum diseases like gingivitis, which can cause redness, swelling and bleeding.1 Left untreated, gum disease can worsen and cause further issues down the track.
What is a good oral health routine?
Just brushing your teeth doesn't quite cut it when it comes to establishing a great dental hygiene routine. To thoroughly clean your mouth, you need to brush your teeth to remove surface build up and floss to remove any bacteria that has built up between your teeth that your toothbrush can't reach.1 Using a mouthwash also helps to kill any germs that may be sitting on your gums or tongue. A tongue cleaner is great for removing that extra bacteria - particularly the kind that builds up overnight. If you want to step up your dental game, I'd also recommend a great natural teeth whitener and oral spray to get your teeth really sparkling and your breath smelling fresh.

Noosa Basics Dental Floss with Activated Charcoal
As tedious as it may be, flossing is essential to healthy teeth and gums. I love the Noosa Basics Dental Floss with Activated Charcoal as it's biodegradable, made from Bamboo Charcoal filament coated with plant based wax and Coconut Oil, and infused with Myrrh, Clove, Manuka and Peppermint extracts. Known for its absorbent properties, Activated Charcoal helps to remove plaque from between the teeth. Available in Mint and Cinnamon flavours.

Another favourite of mine is the Pollen Botanicals Zoom Teeth Whitener, which is a paste formula packed with Activated Charcoal and Australian Bentonite Clay to naturally whiten teeth. Food grade and Australian Made, this natural, gently abrasive paste also contains Coconut Oil and Lemon and Peppermint Essential Oils to neutralise bacteria, remove plaque and brighten teeth, helping to polish the teeth without causing sensitivity or damaging enamel.
Natural tongue cleaning
Dr Tungs Tongue Cleaner
Oral health doesn't end with teeth cleaning and whitening - there's a few more steps you can take to make sure your dental hygiene routine is as thorough as possible. I've been using the Dr Tung's Tongue Cleaner for years now and although it takes a bit of getting used to, my routine wouldn't be the same without it. A whopping 50% of the bacteria found in our mouth is found on the surface of our tongues, and toothbrushes just aren't designed to remove this bacteria. This u-shaped tongue cleaner gently scrapes off bacteria and soft plaque, helping to prevent bad breath and even improve tastebud perception.
Dr Brite Soothe and Restore Oral Spray
Formulated to provide soothing relief from oral pain, the Dr Brite Soothe and Restore Oral Spray also helps to kill bacteria and freshen breath, and is ideal to keep in your handbag when you're on the go. Containing antibacterial Tea Tree Oil, anti-inflammatory Aloe Vera, calming Clove Oil and refreshing Peppermint Oil, this alcohol-free, vegan and gluten-free mouth spray supports the mouth's natural healing process and can be used up to four times per day.
