How to Treat Thrush Naturally
Thrush, also known as Candida, can be uncomfortable, irritating and inconvenient, and it is actually something that can affect most women at some point, so I worked with our Nourished Life Naturopath Mel to put together this guide to treating Thrush naturally.
If you have ever experienced Thrush 'down there', I am sure you will know how awful and uncomfortable it can be! Thrush is actually a very common complaint among women, with symptoms often affecting your daily life and activities. While it is not known to cause any long-term issues, Thrush should be treated so that you can get back to your everyday routine. As recommended by our Nourished Life Naturopath Mel, natural health supplements designed especially to target the symptoms of Thrush as well as digestive supplements can help to correct the imbalances causing the problem. For more advice on treating Thrush, please speak to your health care professional or contact our Nourished Life Naturopath, Melanie Ruckley, via email at - .
What is Thrush?
Thrush, also known as Candida or a yeast infection, is caused by an overgrowth of Candida Albicans Yeast, found naturally in both the gut and the vagina. If this Yeast is thrown off balance by an increase, symptoms such as itching, burning, stinging, discharge or redness can develop. This overgrowth can be caused by factors such as oral contraceptive use, diabetes, pregnancy, iron deficiency and other health changes, however the specific cause can sometimes be difficult to identify. Around 75% of women will actually experience thrush during their lifetime, making it a very common issue.1 According to Mel, Thrush can also occur in the mouth, can be fed by sugar, and may not always have obvious symptoms - other symptoms of Thrush can include headaches, brain fog, fatigue and other recurring fungal infections on the body.
Natural remedies for Thrush
According to Mel, Thrush can be treated naturally with specialised herbal supplements designed to target the symptoms and correct the imbalance, while digestive support supplements can also be used to restore balance to the Yeast found in the gut. Achieving a good balance of bacteria in both the gut and the vagina can help to treat an existing overgrowth as well as prevent future flare-ups. Good hygiene and avoiding perfumed soaps and menstrual products can also be important in preventing Thrush.
